PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contact image sensor consisting of components such as a light emitting element, a light guide system, and a sensor IC such that the focal distance and conjugation length of the light guide system do not place any restriction on the product size and even an original floated from a read glass plate causes no fluctuation in image information. SOLUTION: A lens group 15 is placed between a light guide path array 12 and a glass window 6 to configure the light guide system whose size is independent of the focal distance and the conjugation length thereof. Since the lens group 15 collects reflected light made incident perpendicularly onto a face of an original 7 and emits the collected light into the light guide path 14, the reflected light from the same area of the original 7 do not enter the plurality of light guide paths simultaneously so as to decrease the noise level and cause no fluctuation in the image information even when the original is floated from the glass window. The lens group 15 consists of a large number of small lenses, which are arranged in a way that each cross sectional area of the light guide paths 14 includes a plurality of the lenses so as to eliminate the effect of offsets among the components. Layering the components without any gap inbetween can make the product low in its profile.
