PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission system that reproduces an optical signal waveform through sure PMD compensation and reduces the configuration for the PMD compensation. SOLUTION: The optical transmission system is provided with PMD compensation circuits 13a-13e that apply polarized wave mode dispersion compensation for every one or more relay spans in an optical transmission line 11 having one or more optical amplification repeaters 12a-12e so as to compensate the polarized wave mode dispersion caused between relay span optical transmission lines. Since power combination between the polarized wave modes is small between the relay span optical transmission liens and only the polarized wave mode dispersion to a degree of neglecting the effect of a nonlinear optical effect takes place, the polarized wave mode dispersion can surely be compensated.
