PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain large braking torque by a permanent magnet having a volume smaller than the conventional one. SOLUTION: This eddy current type speed reducer comprises a case 10, including a basic frame 8 which is disposed between braking discs 4, 6, a pair of inside magnetic field generating groups G1 consisting of magnets 30 and ferromagnetic members 32, which are arranged alternately into annular shape in the basic frame 8 to face opposite to the faces of the braking discs 4, 6, and a pair of outside magnetic field generating groups consisting of magnets 36 and ferromagnetic members 38, which are so disposed in the basic frame 8 as to face the opposite faces of the braking discs 4, 6 and are in parallel with the corresponding magnets 30 and ferromagnetic members 32 in the radial direction. Each of the magnets 30, 36 is formed with magnetic pole faces on both sides in the circumferential direction, with the magnetic faces facing each other in the circumferential direction and being mutually magnetized with the same polarities.
