PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arrange a light transmission means, through which the operating state of a scanner can be seen from the outside, to resolve erroneous scanning in a picture reader provided in combination with facsimile equipment or the like. SOLUTION: A platen 2 on which a document is to be mounted is provided on the main body frame of a picture reader 1, and a scanner 3 provided with a light source is moved along the lower face of the platen 2 to read a picture. A transparent light transmission means 5 integrated with the main body frame is provided on the front side of the frame, and a display window 6 is exposed to the surface of the frame. Leakage of light of a lamp to the display window 6 is used to confirm the moving state of the scanner 3, and thus the operating state of the scanner can be seen.
