The invention concerns a method for verifying the authenticity of documents, for example bank notes or cheques, characterised in that it consists in successively exposing the document (D) to be controlled, to several light sources (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D,...) consisting of optoelectronic components and emitting, each, a different light spectrum (S1, S2, S3,...); sensing the light rays (LR1, LR2,...) emitted by the optoelectronic components and reflected by the document (D) and/or transmitted through the latter, by means of receiver cells formed by photosensitive components (2A, 2B,...) enabling to convert the lights received on their sensing surface into analog electric signals transmitted to a unit digital signal processing and analysis (UTANS), after being shaped and converted into digital signals, said processing unit incorporating an algorithm and being configured and programmed to analyse the digital signals received and for transmitting a result concerning the authenticity of the controlled document.
