A heat-assisted fumigation method for mills etc. in which circulating treatment gas is heated indirectly by a heat exchange surface which is itself heated by a combustion heater via an internal air circulation system, thus preventing thermal decomposition of the fumigating agent by direct contact with the heat exchange surface on the burner. A method for fumigating treatment areas, mainly mills, food processing operations or other areas subject to infestation, by using a fuel-burning heater and circulating the treatment gas, which is heated by passing it through one compartment (11) of a heat exchanger. In this system, the heat exchanger is heated by air circulating through its second compartment (9) and through another compartment (7), which is heated by the heat-exchange surface (6) of the heater's combustion chamber (4), and the treatment gas is circulated in such a way that the fumigating agent in the gas does not come into contact with the surface (6) of the combustion chamber (4) and does not therefore undergo thermal decomposition during fumigation.
