Novel fluorinated, aromatic liquid crystalline esters are claimed. A new liquid crystalline ester is of formula (I). Independent claims are also included for: (i) a liquid crystalline medium (M) based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectric anisotropy and containing the ester (I) in addition to at least one compound of formulae (II)-(VIII); and (ii) an electro-optical liquid crystal display containing (M). R = H, 1-15C alkyl or alkenyl, optionally substituted by CN, CF3 or halogen and optionally containing at least one non-neighboring -O-, -S-, cyclobutylene, -CO-, -CO-O- or -OCO-O- group; A<1> = (i) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, optionally having non-neighboring CH2 groups replaced by -O- and/or -S-, (ii) 1,4-phenylene, optionally having one or two CH groups replaced by N, (iii)1,4-cyclohexenylene or (iv) 1,4-bicyclo-(2,2,2)-octylene, piperidin-1,4-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydro naphthalene-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronapthalene-2,6-diyl, all optionally substituted by CN or F; Z<1> = -COO-, -O-CO-, -CH2-O-, -O-CH2-, -C2H4-, -CH=CH-, -CF2O-, -OCF2-, -C?=C-, -(CH2)4-, -CH=CH-C2H4-, -C2F4- or a single bond; L<1>, L<2> = H or F; Y = F, Cl, CN or 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy, optionally substituted by halogen and optionally having non-neighboring CH2 group(s) replaced by -O- or -CH=CH-; n = 0-2; R<0> = 1-9C n-alkyl, oxaalkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl; X<0> = F, Cl or 1-6C halogenated alkyl, alkoxy or alkenyl; Z<0> = -C4H8-, -CF2O-, -OCF2-, -C2F4- or -CH=CH-; Y<1>-Y<4> = H or F; and r = 0 or 1. |
