<p>A polymer electrolyte fuel cell comprising an anode-side separator and a cathode-side separator having a generally rectangular part in contact with an anode or cathode. Since such a cell exhibits its performance only when water produced on the cathode side during operation is removed efficiently, the oxidizing agent gas passage on the cathode side separator is made to meander in order to increase the gas flow rate, thus forcedly removing the produced water. Further the power of an auxiliary machine for supplying the oxidizing agent gas must to be reduced by reducing the pressure loss thereof from the viewpoint of a compact cell. Based on the finding that the pressure loss increases and the water drainage efficiency degrades when the linear portion of the gas passage is placed parallel with a short side of the generally rectangular part of the separator, the length of the long side of the generally rectangular part is so determined as to be greater than twice the length of the short side and the linear portion is placed along the long side.</p> |
