A drive unit for a car has an IC engine (1) plus a gearbox (2). The drivable wheels of the car can be driven via the rotary movement of the output shaft of the gearbox. The drivable wheels of the car can be driven alternatively or additionally via an electrical machine (4) which can be mounted so that its rotor forms a part of the output shaft of the gearbox. The electrical machine is dimensioned in its outside measurements so that this can replace a part of the output shaft (7) of the gearbox with a car that is designed for a main drive by means of the IC engine.
