A video tape recording/reproducing apparatus in which the format of a video signal recorded on a video tape is recognized, a converter concerning the video signal is operated if necessary, and the video signal is outputted and displayed. More specifically, in reproducing a video signal of high-definition TV type, the signal is outputted to a high-definition TV output terminal, and the control unit operates a down-converter by the signal from the format recognizing unit to down-convert the video signal into the one of NTSC or PAL type and to output the signal to an NTSC or PAL output terminal. In reproducing a video signal of NTSC or PAL type, the signal is outputted to an NTSC or PAL output terminal, and the control unit operates an up-converter by the signal from the format recognizing unit to up-convert the video signal into the one of high-definition TV type and to output the video signal to a high-definition TV output terminal.
