The proposed process for preparing a hydrogenation catalyst based on aluminium alloy and a transient metal is characterized by preparation of a kneading material from the alloy and an auxiliary agent, the kneading material is then formed to shaped bodies, the shaped bodies are subjected to calcination and the calcined shaped bodies are then treated with an alkali metal hydroxide, whereby the auxiliary agent is represented by (a) polyvinyl alcohol and water or (b) stearic acid. The catalyst is intended for hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis, particularly a partial hydrogenation of aliphatic alpha, omega-dinitriles to aliphatic alpha, omega-aminonitriles.
