The invented process for preparing absorption material containing cellulose fibers obtained by defibering a layer of such fibers and exhibiting increased sorptive capacity is characterized in that the fiber layer is treated before defibering in the presence of water with a hydrophobic substance having specific surface of at least 50 me2/g.
