An internal combustion engine includes a plurality of cylinders, a plurality of fuel injectors, compression brake units operatively associated the cylinders, an engine speed sensor and an engine control unit (ECU) for controlling the fuel injectors a nd the compression brake unit as a function of at least sensed engine speed. A meth od of measuring performance of the engine includes running the engine at a specifi ed speed under no load, setting to zero a rate of fuel flow delivered by a selected o ne of the fuel injectors associated with one of the cylinders associated with the compressi on brake unit, increasing by a first amount a rate of fuel flow delivered by the other of t he fuel injectors so that the engine runs at the specified engine speed, activating the compressi on brake unit associated with the selected fuel injector so that the cylinder associated therewith absorbs power, and again increasing by a second amount a rate of fuel flow delivered by the other of the fuel injectors so that the engine runs at the specified engine speed. Th is second amount of fuel flow rate increase thereby represents a performance characteristic o f the engine.
