Organic compds. are synthesised from aromatic compds. by elimination from adjacent C atoms of 2 H atoms or one of H atom and a functional group. The aromatic compds. may be substd. with halogens, CN, CF3, Ph, C1-6 alkyl or alkenyl or may contain CO, CO2, C2O3, OH, NH2 or azo gps. Elimination is effected by passage of the vapour through the plasma of a glow discharge then separating the decomposition product by distilln. or chromatography. Thus beta-Br-ethylbenzene is dehydrobrominated to give styrene which may be further dehydrogenated to give phenylacetylene. The glow discharge may be from 25 to 600 watts.
