<p>The invention relates to a novel class of macrocyclic oxalactones which are highly useful for use as perfumes. The compounds of formula (I) <CHEM> wherein n and m represent an integer with the value 0, 1, 2 or 4 the sum of n and m being 4 or less; p and q represent an integer with the value 0 through 15 the sum of p and q being 15 or less; the sum of n, m, p and q is 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15; and R1, R2, R3 and R4 independently represent hydrogen or a lower alkyl group according to the invention have a very desirable fresh and floral musk odor in combination with other advantageous properties, such as stability, substantivity and biodegradability.</p> |
