The present method is characterized in that during the cutting action the belt (41) material is set between two clamping jaws (10, 13) and is seized on each side (66) by the cutting edges (36,37) of the blade (17) which form an acute angle between them and are straight or curved convex towards the belt. The blade (17) is passed through the belt (41) material with a clearly vertical play whereby the blade (17) centers automatically relative to the reinforcement insert enclosed in the belt (41). The two cutting edges (36, 37) of the blade can be symmetrical relative to each other to form together a V- shaped cutting notch.
