The present invention relates to electrochemical cells, wherein the electrodes are so arranged that one is located within a cavity in the other, an ionically permeable, electrically insulating separator basket extending into the cavity and about the inner electrode to inhibit electrical shorting between the electrodes, an electrically insulating barrier being provided at the bottom of the well defined in the outer electrode, in combination with crossed strips of insulator material to form the basket, thereby preventing the ingrowth of electrode dendrites and preventing permeation of outer electrode mix into the basket.
