An apparatus for controlling an ultrasonic device, in particular a tip insert system with a magnetostrictive transducer, comprises a microprocessor unit and a sweep oscillator circuit. The microprocessor monitors the power consumption of the tip insert at a plurality of frequencies and determines the frequency corresponding to an optimum power transfer point. Data relating to a range of frequency values may be stored. Means may be provided for allowing a user to manually adjust the oscillator circuit to a value offset from the resonance frequency. The apparatus may vary the oscillator frequency in response to the insertion of different tips and is suitable for use with dental scalers, scalpels or urinary tract probes.
