PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently backfill a segment tunnel constructed in the rear of a shield machine. SOLUTION: This invention provides an underwater shield tunneling method and the shield machine used for the method as means for solving the above problem. This method has such characteristics that the shield machine is driven in the water while assembling segments rearward and the rearward existing segments are backfilled followed to the driving using soil in the working face side of the shield machine removed in driving.
