PURPOSE: A multimedia communication system having an advertising function and a method thereby are provided to transmit an advertising message instead of a telephone bell sound generated after making a phone call. CONSTITUTION: An exchange(48,49) is provided with a bell sound generation part(54,56) and an advertising message generation part(55,57). The bell sound generation part(54,56) generates and outputs a bell sound according to a belling signal. The advertising message generation part(55,57) generates and outputs an advertising message. While an advertising message(45), instead of a bell sound, is transmitted to a calling subscriber, a bell sound(46) to inform that a called subscriber has been called is generated and outputted from the bell sound generated part(54,56). The advertising message(45) is forwarded until the called subscriber hooks up. In case that the called subscriber hooks up, a baby bell billing database(50) calculates a cost considering a charge rate based on advertisement listening.
