PURPOSE: The method for the hard disk power-down to reduce the power consumption of the computer system is provided to control the power down operation of the hard disk without the unnecessary power consumption, and not to write the unnecessary code according to the main chip set. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the following steps. The hard disk power-down driver tests if the computer system is on booting(S10). If yes, the running cycle(4 seconds) of the hard disk power-down driver is configured(S12). The hard disk power-down driver is loaded every configured time(for example, 4 sec)(S14). The driver tests if the hard disk is on the I/O motion(S16). If yes, the process returns to the (S14). If no, the hard disk is power-downed on the sleep mode or on the standby mode(S18). The driver tests if the hard disk is on the sleep mode(S20). If yes, the driver tests if the I/O request is happened(S22). If no, the hard disk keeps being on the sleep mode(S26). If yes, after the hard disk state is switched to the power-on state by the S/W reset, the driver performs the I/O motion. The process returns to the (S14). If no in the step (S20), that is, if the hard disk is on the standby mode, the driver tests if the I/O request is happened(S30). If no, the hard disk keeps being on the standby mode(S34). If yes, after the hard disk state is switched to the power-on state, the driver performs the I/O motion. The process returns to the (S14).
