PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for asymmetric synthesis of an optically active 2-alkoxyalcohol in high productivity. SOLUTION: An α-alkoxy ketone is asymmetrically reduced by an asymmetric hydrogen transfer reduction by a catalyst of a metal compound of the group VIII containing an asymmetric ligand such as an asymmetric diphenylethylenediamine derivative, etc., to give an optically active 2- alkoxyalcohol.
