PURPOSE: A process for synthesizing polystyrene resin having a hydroxyl group at γ,δor more positions by reacting a cyclic ether compound of 4 to 5 atom ring such as trimethylene oxide or 2-methyltetrahydrofuran to a benzene ring of polystyrene resin is provided, thereby the title resin is produced which is capable of being used as base material of various organic reactions such as a peptide synthetic reaction. CONSTITUTION: The modified polystyrene granular resin is prepared by the following procedure: polystyrene resin by cross-linking with divinylbenzene is swelled in a solvent; a cyclic ether compound of 4 to 5 atom ring is addition-reacted to a benzene ring of swelled polystyrene resin in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst; and a C3-4 hydrocarbon moiety of a hydroxy terminal is introduced into a benzene ring. The Lewis acid catalyst is selected from the group consisting of AlCl3, AlBr3, SnCl4, SnBr4 and BF3.
