PURPOSE: An air conditioner, method for setting indoor unit capacity and method for controlling operation of air conditioner is provided to allow the indoor unit capacity to be automatically set in accordance with the size of the indoor area. CONSTITUTION: A method for setting indoor unit capacity comprises a step(S1) of storing a standard capacity and data related to the appropriate temperature of heat exchanger area of the indoor unit; a step(S2) of operating the indoor unit in accordance with the reference data related to the indoor area having a predetermined size; a step(S3-S5) of measuring the temperature of the heat exchanger area after an elapse of a predetermined time; a step(S6) of comparing the measured temperature with the appropriate temperature of the heat exchanger area according to the reference data; and a step(S7-S10) of determining the indoor unit capacity as a standard capacity when the measured temperature is the same as the appropriate temperature, and operating the indoor unit by sequentially applying the reference data and data related to the indoor area with difference size until the measured temperature becomes the same as the appropriate temperature when the measured temperature is different from the appropriate temperature.
