PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing member and a paper member for the shock absorbing member in which a shock absorbing segment is integrally molded into the main body of a single shock absorbing member, the number of steps for adhering the shock absorbing segment and the number of component parts such as adhesive agent are reduced. SOLUTION: This shock absorbing member is assembled by a sheet of cardboard 10, wherein it has a first side surface 15, a second side surface 16, a bottom surface 11 and a third side surface 18. The third side surface 18 forms a raised surface 19 and a folded-back surface 22. To this folded-back surface 22 are connected further folded and formed shock absorbing segments 37, 38 and 45, and each of the shock absorbing segments 37, 38 is arranged and constituted along a line in parallel with the first side surface 15 and the second side surface 16. Then, an item to be packaged is installed in a space formed by the shock absorbing segments 37, 38 and 45.
