PURPOSE: To solve a shortcoming associated with a CF(color filter) on TFT(thin film transistor) structure which, while arranging a black matrix and a color filter on a TFT substrate, has the display quality inferior to a conventional TFT-CF separated liquid crystal display device due to significant reflection of external light by counter and pixel electrode ITOs (indium tin oxide) and by signal and scanning lines. CONSTITUTION: In a CF on TFT structure color liquid crystal display panel in which the black matrix and the color filter are arranged on the TFT substrate, the gap (d) of the panel and the birefringence Δn of the liquid crystal material are selected and controlled by utilizing the wavelength dependence existing between the retardation Δnd and the transmittance. Thereby the wavelength of the external light reflected with the pixel electrode ITO is shifted to the shorter wavelength region so as to reduce the reflected light.
