PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brillant coating composition having incorporated thereinto a bismuth oxychloride crystal pigment, which coating composition being capable of forming a silky toned metallic coating film exhibiting excellent light resistance, and to provide a method for forming a coating film and a coated matter. SOLUTION: As the bismuth oxychloride crystal, there is employed one having a particle size in the range of 7-11μm and has a crystal thickness of less than 60 nm. The bismuth oxychloride crystal may be coated with, for example, cerium hydroxide. A coating composition containing a brilliant pigment comprising the above bismuth oxychloride crystal and a vehicle can satisfy the requirement thatΔL is 0-3 after 48 day-exposure in Florida state in the united states of America.
