PURPOSE: To enhance the display sensitivity in a movie mode operation of a solid-state image pickup device. CONSTITUTION: This solid-state image pickup device includes photoelectric conversion elements 3 arranged on a two-dimensional plane, vertical charge transfer paths 5 formed closely to the photoelectric conversion element array, a vertical charge transfer electrode EV that is used to transfer charge in the unit of one charge transfer, a horizontal charge transfer path 7 that is provided to one end of the vertical charge transfer paths 5, receives the transferred charge and transfers the charge in the horizontal direction, horizontal charge transfer electrodes EH arranged on the path 7 in the horizontal direction, an output amplifier 11 that is formed to one end of the electrodes EH and amplifies the charge from the horizontal charge transfer path 7, and a control circuit D that reads the charge read from the photoelectric conversion elements 3 to the vertical charge transfer paths 5 to all charge transfer stages 41, transfers the charges from the two photoelectric conversion elements 3 or more from the vertical charge transfer paths 5 to the horizontal charge transfer path 7, stops the transfer of charge, and allows the charge to be transferred by the horizontal charge transfer path 7 and to be outputted externally in a summing movie mode.
