PURPOSE: A chiral compound, a composition containing the compound and a use of the compound are provided, which compound is used as a chiral dopant for producing a cholesteric liquid crystal and which composition is usable as cosmetics for protecting human skin or hair from sunbeam or a UV filter in medicinal preparation. To obtain a chiral compound suitable for producing a cholesteric liquid crystal composition. CONSTITUTION: The chiral compound represented by the formula(1) is used as a chiral dopant for nematic or cholesteric liquid crystal, wherein R1 is Z1-Y1-(A1)m-Y2-M1-Y3-(A2)n-Y4-; R2 is H, an alkyl group of C1-C12, an alkylcarbonyl group of C1-C12, an aryl group, an arylcarbonyl or Z2-Y5-(A3)o-Y6-M2-Y7-(A4)p-Y11-; R3 is H, an alkyl group of C1-C12, an aryl group or -OR5; R4 is H, an alkyl group of C1-C12, an aryl group or -OR6; R5 and R6 are independent each other and are H, an alkyl group of C1-C12, an alkylcarbonyl group of C1-C12, an aryl group, an arylcarbonyl group or Z3-Y8-(A5)q-Y9-M3-Y10-(A6)r-Y12-; A1 to A6 are a spacer having a chain length of C1-C30; M1 to M3 are mesogen group; Y1 to Y10 are -O-, -S-, -C(=O)-, -C(=O)-O-, -O-C(=O)-, -CH=CH-C(=O)-O-, -O-C(=O)-O-, -C(=O)-N(R)-, -(R)N-C(=O)-, -CH2-O-, -O-CH2-, -CH=N-, -N=CH-, or -N=N-; Y11 and Y12 are -C(=O)-, -O-C(=O)-, -CH=CH-C(=O)-, -(R)N-C(=O)-, -CH2- or -O-CH2-; R is H or an alkyl group of C1-C4; Z1 to Z3 are H, an alkyl group of C1-C12, a polymerizable group or a radical having a polymerizable group; and m to r are 0 or 1.
