1344559 Halogenated 2,6-dibenzylphenols INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES CHIMIQUES ET BIOLOGIQUES APPLIQUEES 28 June 1972 [6 July 1971] 30258/72 Heading C2C Novel halogenated 2,6-dibenzylphenols of the general formula wherein A is a halogen atom and each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, provided that (a) A is not F when R 1 R 2 = R 3 =R 4 =R 5 =R 6 =H and (b) A is not C1 when (1) simultaneously R 3 =R 4 =H and R 1 =R 2 = R 5 =R 6 =Cl, (2) simultaneously R 3 =R 3 =R 4 = R 5 =H and R 1 =R 6 =Cl and (3) simultaneously R 1 =R 2 =R 5 =R 6 =H and R 3 =R 4 =Cl, are prepared (i) when the rings of the benzyl groups are substituted in an asymmetric fashion with respect to the phenolic ring, by condensing together a phenol and benzyl chloride of the respective general formulae about 1 mole of the phenol being used per 0À75 mole of the benzyl chloride, and condensing the monobenzylphenol obtained with a benzyl chloride of the general formula substantially stoichiometric quantities of the benzyl chloride and monobenzyl-phenol being used, and (ii) when R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are respectively identical to R 5 , R 5 and R 4 , by condensing a phenol of the second general formula above with a benzyl chloride of the third general formula above, more than 2 moles of the benzyl chloride being used per mole of the phenol. Pharmaceutical compositions having bacteriostatic and fungistatic activity comprise, as active ingredient, at least one halogenated 2,6- dibenzylphenol of the first general formula above, together with an inert, physiologically acceptable carrier. |
