PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a guide rail free from any additional wear when a drive element or a guide element is extended or moved over a guide rail end part. SOLUTION: In the metal guide rail for a drive mechanism or a guide mechanism, in particular, a drive cable or a slide element for an openable roof part of a vehicle, the guide rails 10 mass-produced by cutting a metal shape to a required length have had cut edges on their ends; however, problems associated with the cut edges can be solved by fitting a protective cap 16 over the cut edges to the ends of the guide rail 10 by which the drive mechanism or the guide mechanism is guided.
