PURPOSE: A method for identifying a received short message in a mobile terminal is provided to make a user recognize the importance of an SMS message through a sound level of a receiving bell, without the necessity of directly confirming the SMS message. CONSTITUTION: If an SMS bell volume adjustment mode is selected by a user, the mobile terminal sets up bell sound levels according to the importance rates of SMS messages(ST11). If an SMS message is received, the mobile terminal checks a privacy parameter of the SMS message header and confirms an importance rate(ST12,ST13). The mobile terminal selects a preset bell sound level corresponding to the importance rate of the SMS message(ST14) and rings the bell according to the selected bell sound level(ST15). Afterwards the mobile terminal stores the SMS message(ST16).
