PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain the deterioration of a fuel consumption while restraining the generation of a hunting phenomenon relating to the switch of an engine combustion method suitably. SOLUTION: An electronic control device switchingly controls the engine combustion method of an internal combustion engine between a stratification combustion and a homogeneous combustion based on the engine operation state such as an engine load ratio and engine rotation speed. By setting respective judging values KL1 (NE), KL2 (NE) for judging the switch timing of the engine combustion method to a different value, a hysteresis is set to the switch condition of the engine combustion method. When the electronic control device judges that the engine operation state is shifted from a homogeneous combustion area to the hysteresis area, thereafter continues for a prescribed term and is in the hystresis area, the engine combustion method is switched from the homogeneous combustion to the stratification combustion.
