PURPOSE: A hard metal for covering the surface of a cutting tool or an abrasion resisting tool is provided which improves abrasion resistance and heat resistance, and has superior cutting performance. CONSTITUTION: In a cutting tool or an abrasion resisting tool of which surface is coated with a TiAIN hard covering layer, at least 80 at.% of Al is contained in metal constituents of the TiAIN hard covering layer, a preferential growth direction of the TiAIN hard covering layer is a (111) plane, and the TiAIN hard covering layer has a thickness of 0.5 to 10 microns in the hard metal for covering the surface of a cutting tool or an abrasion resisting tool. In a cutting tool or an abrasion resisting tool of which surface is coated with a TiAIN hard covering layer, a peak caused from wurtzite AIN in the angle ranging from 56 to 58 degree exists as a peak which is not detected from a matrix, but detected from a thin film when analyzing the TiAIN hard covering layer with an XRD (X-Ray Diffractometer), a preferential growth direction of the TiAIN hard covering layer is a (111) plane, and the TiAIN hard covering layer has a thickness of 0.5 to 10 microns in the hard metal for covering the surface of a cutting tool or an abrasion resisting tool.
