PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten the correlation between the results of a focusing measuring instrument and visually evaluated results. SOLUTION: The focusing measuring instrument photographs a prescribed test pattern displayed on a CRT 6 by means of a CCD camera 3 and calculates the energy intensity distribution of the electron beam of the CRT 6 by using the photographed picture. Then the instrument discriminates whether the energy intensity distribution has a crest-like shape (appropriate), a trumpet-like shape having a widened foot (haloing trend), or bell-like shape having a trapezoid top (blooming trend) and evaluates the focusing of the CRT 6 based on the discriminated results. Since the instrument classifies the shape of the energy intensity distribution into shapes having high correlation with visual evaluation and evaluates the focusing of the CRT 6 based on the shapes, the correlation between the measured results of the instrument and visually evaluated results is heightened.
