PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device with which both a reflective display using external light and a transmissive display using backlight illumina tion are feasible and high contrast is obtained both in the reflective and transmis sive displays in the single polarizing plate mode device equipped with only one polarizing plate. SOLUTION: The reflective liquid crystal display device is provided with a first polarizing plate 11, a first optical retardation plate 13, a twisted optical retardation plate 12, an STN(supertwisted nematic) liquid crystal element 21 containing a semitransmissive reflection layer 9 inside, a second optical retardation plate 18, a second polarizing plate 17 and a backlight 16. |
