PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid an auto-color selection(ACS) scan being necessary before the main scan that reads actual image data, when an ACS operation is carried out which causes increase in the processing time due to a conventional way where both scans are carried out in the same direction and then to lower the productivity. SOLUTION: The ACS scans are carried out to originals (1804, 1808) in the negative directions, opposite to the directions of main scans (1806, 1809) so that the processing speed is increased.
