In order to set the transmission ratio using a ratio valve, at least one piston-cylinder unit of a continuously adjustable cone contact gear is acted on. The control parameters of the control device are matched to the control pressure to be set. The regulation of the pressure is based on these control parameters. The control parameters may be matched to the operating point of the transmission valve. Independent claims are included for methods of setting the transmission ratio of a cone contact gear, and the use of the method to set or hold the transmission ratio when reversing a vehicle.
