PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting apparatus that can prevent degradation of electrodes caused by high pulse voltage applied between electrodes of the discharging lamp 5 when starting the discharge lamp in a method other than a method suppressing the high pulse voltage and enhance its life. SOLUTION: In a discharge lamp lighting apparatus comprising a power supply circuit 3 that supplies direct current power for maintaining the discharge lamp 5 in lighting state and a high-voltage pulse generating circuit 4 performing the lighting starting of the discharge lamp 5, it comprises a high-voltage polarity switching circuit 6 for switching polarity of the high-voltage pulse outputted from the high-voltage generating circuit 4 and a polarity switching control circuit 7 for controlling the high-voltage pulse polarity switching to be repeated a predetermined number of times.
