X-ray contrast agents - comprising oil-in-water emulsions of iodinated hydrocarbons

X-ray contrast agents comprise oil-in-water emulsions in which the oil phase is a 12-18C aliphatic iodinated hydrocarbon, pref. iodohexadecane. The emulsion pref. contains 20-60 vol. % of the iodinated hydrocarbon and also a surfactant acid foam inhibitor. The emulsions are esp. useful for producing radiograms of the gastrointestinal tract, esp. where perforation of the tract is indicated.
