MULTILEVEL PICTURE DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the data quantity of an unnecessary picture area and to shorten communication time by the efficient transmission of multilevel picture data. SOLUTION: An encoding device 1 resolves multilevel picture data which are read from a data storage part 3 into bit planes by a bit plane resolution processing part 4. A picture which is not necessary to be recognized on a decoding device 2-side is worked into a background color by a data work part 5 on the bit plane except the bit plane of the highest bit. The bit plane except the bit plane of the highest bit and the bit plane which is data-worked are encoded by an encoding part 6 and are transmitted to the decoding device 2. The decoding device 2 decodes the received bit plane by a decoding part 8 and a synthesis processing part 9 synthesizes the planes and picture-displays them on a display part 10.
