PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure coincidence of numbers of sending lines of image data between both sides of a double-sided original, when an image reader discontinues its reading operation of the original for some reason. SOLUTION: The number of output lines of the image data which are read by a CCD 1a is counted by a line counter 14a, and the number of output lines of the image data which are read by a CIS 1b is counted by a line counter 14b. When the read operations of image data are discontinued, the counted value of both counters 14a and 14b are compared with each other at the time point. Then the sending of the preceding count value, e.g. of the image data which are read by the CCD 1a is stopped immediately, and the reading operation of t he CIS 1b is carried on. When the counted value of the counter 14a becomes equal to that of the counter 14b, the sending of the image data read by the CIS 1b is stopped.
