PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a short arc type extra-high pressure discharge lamp in which the mercury immediately evaporated from the welded part space at the start-up may rapidly move into the light-emitting space, the arc at the start-up is rapidly stabilized, there is no risk of lighting failure of lamp damage, and also the eccentricity of the electrode is eliminated. SOLUTION: The base part 20a of the electrode is provided with a path consisting of a groove 21 or slit 22 connecting the welded part space S2 and discharge space S1, so that the mercury immediately evaporated from the welded part space may rapidly move into the light emitting space. A thin metal film is grasped by a slit 22 communicating with the welded part space to eliminate the eccentricity of the electrode.
