Data storage device, especially a computer hard drive, has a recording head, a recording medium that is made up a magnetic layer that exhibits anisotropy in a direction perpendicular to that of the magnetic layer, and a coder that is designed to produce a coded data signal that is a sequence of signal change-overs with a mean value of zero. An Independent claim is made for a procedure for recording digital data on a storage medium.
