PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the recognition precision of a pattern and to speed up processing time. SOLUTION: At the time of starting, a control processor 25 reads data of whole dictionary patterns from dictionary ROM, develops each pattern in the dictionary pattern storage areas of memories 22 in respective PE of an SIMD- type parallel processor 21. The input patterns of recognition objects are stored in the input patterns storage areas of the memories in respectively PE. Respective PE normalize the dictionary patterns in the corresponding memory to the sizes of the input patterns, store them in a normalized dictionary pattern storage area, obtain the matching degree of the input patterns and the normalized dictionary pattern and store it in the matching degree storage are of the memory. The control processor collects the matching degrees of all PE from the matching degree storage area and stores them in the difference matching degree storage memory. A matching degree evaluation part defines a character corresponding to the most matched dictionary pattern as a recognition result.
