In the production of a non woven fabric web, a band of crimped, continuous filament tow of polyethylene terephthalate or cellulose acetate is drawn from a bale and passed over a banding roller which generally straightens the tow and removes any snags or false twists. The band of tow is then passed through a spreading zone comprising a number of gripping rollers, one roller of each pair being rubber and its mating roller having alternating lands or grooves which provide an intermittent and differential gripping action on the crimped filaments. The action of these rollers causes the crimps to deregister and separate, prior to entering spreader units. The original tow is spread in stages to entering spreader units. The original tow is spread in stages to a web of between two and ten times its starting width and having a substance of under one ounce per square yard. In this condition the web is delivered on to surface of an endless belt to be passed through a bonding agent applicator followed by a heater dryer section, which unifies and dimensionally stabilizes the spread web. Zig-zag stitching may be used to obtain dimensional stability as an alternative to a bonding agent.
