REDUCED PARTICULATE FORMING DISTILLATE FUELS

Distillate fuel is selectively oxidised, preferably by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a titanium silicalite catalyst to produce hydroxyl and/or carbonyl groups bonded to paraffinic carbon atoms of the diesel fuel molecul es to provide at least 0.1 wt %, preferably at least 0.3 wt %, oxygen in the fuel. The fuel, which yields lower particulate emissions on combustion preferably, has a low sulphur, polycyclic aromatics and olefin content and a high cetane number.
