The passenger safety device (10) extends along the side structure (16) of the automobile (12), adjacent the roof (18) in its stowed position and is provided by an inflatable curtain (14) with two parts which are folded over one another. The first part of the inflatable curtain lies between the side structure and the automobile passenger compartment in its inflated position and the second part of the inflatable curtain is folded out upon inflation, to cover at least part of one side column (60) of the automobile body.
