At least one mobile telephone (MS1) is provided with the functions of a mobile base station comprising functions of a fixed base station and a central unit for coordinating the communication of mobile telephones (MS1, MS2, MS3).The functions of a mobile base station are switched on and off, dependent on the measured field strength threshold values of a fixed base station with which at least one mobile telephone is registered, or dependent on a manual triggering in the mobile telephone (MS1). The mobile telephones (MS1,MS2,MS3) are able to communicate with each other via the mobile base station.
