A filter (10) for filtration of particulates from exhaust gases produced by internal combustion engines, and in particular diesel engines. The filter (10) comprises a mat (20) formed from a natural fibrous material, through which at least a portion of the exhaust gases must pass. The mat is located within a housing dimensioned such that the exhaust gases decelerate on entry to the housing and decrease in temperature. The mat (20) is wetted, either by condensing fluid from the exhaust gases or by pre-wetting the mat with a suitable liquid.
